Today the city is considered one of the finest examples of urban planning in Latin America. The streets are lined with workshops of artists and craftsmen. Churches, convents and mansions recapture the glory of a city that was the capital of a Spanish colony for over 200 years. The designs are a reflection of tastes prevalent at the time. Around the Plaza Mayor (the Main Square) the principal church and governmental buildings were erected: The Cathedral, The Palace of the Captains Generals and the City Hall.
